National Collection of Pathogenic Viruses (NCPV)

The NCPV comprises over 300 human pathogenic viruses available for supply which require handling at UK biosafety containment levels 2, 3 and 4.

Restrictions on the supply of highly pathogenic virus exist  - Individuals and organisations must be registered with us to access restricted items.

Many virus strains require high containment facilities and are covered by strict regulatory controls. The National Collection of Pathogenic Viruses (NCPV) has years of experience in the controlled shipment of such materials and can provide advice. We also supply viral nucleic acid from these pathogens that may be subject to less stringent regulatory controls.

NCPV has an extensive collection of viruses available from the flavivirus, bunyavirus and togavirus families to support virologists researching arboviruses.

As NCPV is based at the UK Health Security Agency’s Porton Down site, it has been able to acquire rare and imported pathogens from virologists within the same organisation who have a long, distinguished record of working on exotic viral pathogens.

As part of the NCPV 500 whole genome sequencing project, 48 genomes from viruses within the collection are available via the ENA website:
